GIS Community
This web page is a collection of GIS resources I have put together for the GIS community. Some of these resources will benefit local (Central California) GIS users, while other resources will benefit GIS users from any location. I have organized the resources into two (2) categories: (1) Miscellaneous Central California GIS Resources, and (2) GIS Software Resources. (You can learn more about GIS Data resources for the California Central Valley on my California Central Valley GIS Data Resources Page.)
Central California Miscellaneous Resources
In this section of the web page you will find a list of miscellaneous resources for the California Central Valley.
- List of California EPSG Codes: The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers maintains a database of map projection and coordinate system information. Each map projection, coordinate system is identified by a unique numeric code, called an EPSG Code. (You can find more information on this database at the EPSG web site. Many GIS programs use this code to identify map projections, especially when transforming GIS data from one map projection to another. I put together a short list of EPSG codes for the more common projections used in California.
- California State Plane Coordinate System (NAD83) Zone Information: I put together a page entitled California State Plane Coordinate System Zone Information with data on each of the zones in the California State Plane Coordinate System (NAD83). This includes a short description of the system, the standard parallels, central meridian, and central parallel of each zone, and the counties included in each zone. You can also download Chapter X of the CALTRANS Survey Manual, which has a lot more information on the California State Plane Coordinate System, and more parameters for each of the zones. Chapter 4 of the CALTRANS Survey Manual has information on land surveying datums used in California, and it includes a map of the Counties in each zone of the California State Plane Coordinate System.
GIS Software Resources
In this section of the web page you will find a list of GIS software resources, most of them released under an open source license. (Those that aren't released under an open source license are still free.) I list CAD software on my CAD Community web page.
- BizzJUMP/OpenJUMP: You should definitely have a copy of OpenJUMP, or my fork of OpenJUMP, BizzJUMP, installed on your desktop so you can do basic work with GIS data files! OpenJUMP and BizzJUMP are released under the GPL, and open source license.
- FWTools: You can use FWTools to reproject/transform raster images and vector data between file formats and map projections/coordinate systems. (Raster data support in FWTools is provided via GDAL. Vector data support is provided via OGR.) FWTools is a command line program, and doesn't have a graphical user interface. It is released under an open source license.
- LizardTech Viewer LizardTech has released an open source viewer, which you use to view MRSID image files and other types of image files. The viewer also lets you export an image from the portion of an image visible on the display of the viewer, with a world file. You can download LizardTech GeoViewer 4.0 from the LizardTech web site.
